Annual Missouri River/Lake Sharpe Clean up set for July 10th
The annual Missouri River/Lake Sharpe Clean up will be held Wednesday, July 10thfrom 5 to 8 p.m.out of Down’s Marina in Pierre. Volunteers are needed to pick up litter and debris along the river.
Last yearduring the event nearly 5,000 pounds of debris was collected in three hours. The annual clean-up is a collaborative partnership between the Central South Dakota Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited, the Izaak Walton League of America, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the City of Pierre, the U.S. Forest Service, and many area businesses and organizations.
The Lake Sharpe Clean Up takes a two pronged approach. Volunteers work out ofboats or as ground based crews picking up trash from areas along the river. The trash is then hauled to Down’s Marina and is sorted for proper disposal.
The Missouri River and Lake Sharpe is very important to the quality of life to people in this community. This clean up provides those who care about the river a chance to give something back to this precious resource.
In what has become a Lake Sharpe Clean up tradition, volunteers who participate are invited by South Dakota Walleyes Unlimited and the Izaak Walton League to a walleye fish fry following the clean up in Griffin Park near Down’s Marina.
