History and Heritage Book Club
Author Lilah Morton Pengra will lead the discussion of the book she wrote, "Sarah Campbell: The First White Woman in the Black Hills was African American," when the History and Heritage Book Club meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, in the Cultural Heritage Center. Pengra pieces together the life of Campbell, who was a cook on Gen. George Armstrong Custer's 1874 expedition to the Black Hills. Pengra lives near Buffalo Gap. She became interested in Campbell's life while doing research on African Americans in Black Hills history. Pengra's appearance is made possible by the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Everyone is welcome to attend.
