History and Heritage Book Club

The fight for women to receive the right to vote will be the focus of the Oct. 9 program at the Cultural Heritage Center. Angelica Shirley Carpenter will join the meeting by Skype to tell about Matilda Joslyn Gage, one of the forgotten heroines of the women's suffrage movement. Carpenter is the author of "Born Criminal: Matilda Joslyn Gage, Radical Suffragist." The book explores Gage's life and why she is often overlooked when her comrades, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, are celebrated. "Born Criminal" is the first volume in the Historical Society Press's Suffrage Project. Nancy Tystad Koupal, the director of the Press, will tell about the three year project which celebrates the 100th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote. Information will also be given about the League of Women Voters.
