History Comes Alive!
Re-enactor Arch Ellwein of Sidney, Mont., will portray "Yellowstone" Vic Smith. Smith, 1850-1925, was a hunter, Army scout, dispatch rider and trick shot. Smith served as hunting guide for Theodore Roosevelt. The portrayal is based on Smith's autobiography, "The Champion Buffalo Hunter," and Ellwein uses Smith's own words to tell Smith's story. Everyone is welcome to attend the free program, made possible by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The book "The Champion Buffalo Hunter" is sold at the Heritage Stores at the Cultural Heritage Center and the Capitol.
