Pierre native Joe Riis, who was recently named a 2016 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year for photography of animal migration in Yellowstone, will speak at Riggs Theater on Sunday December 20 at 2pm. Riis and wildlife ecologist Arthur Middleton have spent the past two years documenting elk migration from Yellowstone National Park. Despite Yellowstone?s status as well known and much visited national park, the elk migration happened mostly out of sight of people. Riis and Middleton used photography, geographic information systems, and mapping to explore and explain elk migration. Their work will be featured in the May 2016 National Geographic magazine. The National Geographic Adventurer of the Year is a recognition given to 10 adventurers or teams of adventurers who have shown ?extraordinary achievement in exploration, adventure sports, conservation, or humanitarianism?. A ?People?s Choice Award? allows the public to vote daily for their favorite adventurer until January 31, 2016.
