The cleanup will be Wednesday, July 10 from 5-8 PM and will be based out of Downs Marina in Griffin Park in Pierre. The Missouri River is critically important to central South Dakota?s quality of life. The cleanup is a way for you to give something back to this invaluable resource that provides so much for this area. Land and water-based teams will pick up litter and trash from areas along the river. Trash bags will be provided. The collected trash is disposed of by the City of Pierre. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toed shoes, bring gloves, sunglasses, and a refillable water bottle (gloves will be provided if needed). Volunteers are invited to a post-cleanup picnic supper in Griffin Park with food generously donated by area restaurants. You can pre-register for the cleanup or register on July 10 at 4:30 in Griffin Park. Volunteers must complete a liability waiver before participating. All ages are invited, children under 18 must have adult supervision. Boats, pontoons, trucks, and trailers are needed to make the cleanup successful. If you can provide equipment, please contact Paul Lepisto at 605-220-1219 or email plepisto@iwla.org. The Pierre-Fort Pierre Missouri River Cleanup is coordinated by the Izaak Walton League, SD Game, Fish, and Parks, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, and the cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre. Many area businesses and organizations also contribute to this effort. This will be the 14th Pierre-Fort Pierre Missouri River Cleanup. To date, 900 volunteers have removed over 28 tons of trash from the river in the Pierre-Fort Pierre area in the 13 cleanups held since 2009.
