Eagles and Bagels at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area
Visitors of the Oahe Downstream Recreation Area near Fort Pierre will once again have the opportunity to learn about the park's winter residents and enjoy a snack on the 22nd Annual "Eagles and Bagels" Walk in the Park!
"This is a great way for participants to get active outside an enjoy our South Dakota winter and view our nation's bird - the Bald Eagle." said Erik Richter, Oahe Downstream District Supervisor.
Program attendees learn about bald eagles from a program presentation, then partake in a guided walk to view and ask further questions about bald eagles.
Program will begin at 9 AM at the Group Lodge at Oahe Downstream. Information will be presented highlighting bald eagles, their habitat, and tips and proper conduct for viewing and photographing these magnificent birds.
Participants will travel through the park for a 2-mile guided walk (weather permitting) to observe the birds in their natural setting. The hike will include a number of stops to view the birds and answer questions. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, cameras, comfortable hiking shoes and cold weather clothing.
Following the hike guests are invited back to the lodge for snacks and refreshments sponsored by Lynn's Dakotamart of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
"Most years we see great attendance and enjoy seeing many families." said Richter. "It's another terrific reason for everyone to come to the park."
For those who are not sure they can complete the entire distance, a shuttle is available.
Campgrounds 1 and 2 at Oahe Downstream are currently closed to vehicle traffic to protect roosting eagles. While walkers and cross-country skiers are allowed into these
